El 12 de septiembre en Atenas, capital de Grecia, la Asociación Cultural José Martí organizó en el Café Art Ernesto —dedicado al Che Guevara—, una tarde político-cultural en solidaridad con los Cinco Héroes Cubanos detenidos injustamente en cárceles de los Estados Unidos. Primeramente fue el saludo del embajador de Cuba en Grecia, Luis Prado García, un representante de la Asociación Heleno-Cubana de Amistad y Natasha Terlexi, representante del capítulo griego de la Asociación José Martí. Se leyeron cartas personales y poemas de los Cinco enviados desde la cárcel a sus familiares en idioma español y también traducidos al griego.

Who was José Martí? Marti affectionately called by the Cuban people the “Apostle of the revolution” was born in 1853 and was killed in combat against the Spanish colonial troops in 1895. He was a founder and central leader of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, the organization that led the struggle of the Cuban people against Spanish colonialism. Marti built and led the organization based on the principal that the liberation struggle had to involve the oppressed and had to be for the benefit of the oppressed. He fought for a non racial movement and future independent Cuba. He fought for greater rights of women. He foresaw, before all other Latin American leaders, the rise of the United States of America, as a new imperialist power that was threatening to pounce on its southern neighbors. The José Martí Cultural Association in Greece is inspired by the spirit of a great figure in the history of Cuba and Latin America. Our goal is to stand in solidarity with the struggles of the living socialist revolution in Cuba today, and at the same time study its history and culture, as exemplified in José Martí (1853-1895). This is the national hero of Cuba, who led in the 19th century struggles for liberation from Spanish colonial rule. However, a century after his birth, Fidel Castro named him as intellectual perpetrator of the uprising that led to the triumph of January 1959. The life and work of the universal, radical humanist Martí shaped the cultural and militant traditions of the Cuban people.
